Phase 5- Assessment

Once you have completed all of the lesson’s tasks please take a moment to upload a screen shot of your classes page.

• To get a screen shot click on the screen you would like to take a picture of, then hold down control and the PRTSC button.
• This button is usually located at the top right of your keyboard.

• Once you have taken the screen shot open up Paint in the accessories folder.
• Click Edit at the top and then Paste. Your screen should appear and you can save the picture.

#4: Make the reports feature a part of your classroom discussion

Every month, the students and I would review our Reports to see what skills and values we were collecting the most points for and which ones were our weak spots. We adjusted the behaviors and their weighted points value during this monthly reflection period, while adding and removing the behaviors we either did or did not need to continue working on the for the time being. Students were involved and invested in their choices; essentially, they were the ones “making the rules” and I was just signing off on them.

Class Dojo is so easily customizable that it makes it very easy to adjust so it fits your class. For example, our class noticed one month that as a whole group, they were losing a lot of points for the noise level during our morning journal time–the rule is you can talk, but only if you are talking to people at your group while you continue to work. We came up with a “Morning Journal All-Star” behavior, which involved me secretly choosing a student for the award every morning based on his or her adherence to a certain expectation (maybe one day, I was looking for students who were talking but still on task; other days, the focus might have been on using spaces between words).

How to Use Class Dojo to Redeem Points

Furthermore, I also had to go into Dojo to add spots to take away points per reward. I used my computer to go into Class Dojo and under the “Needs Work” category, I added the reward spots so the app would deduct points. Dojo puts their titles in ABC order. I added a “Z” to the front so these areas would go at the bottom. I also added the word “REWARD” in all capitals so parents would know this was a reward for cashing out and not a punishment. Dojo allows you to place a value on points earned or lost from 0-5. Since all my point values were in 5s, I gave each of these a -5 value, the maximum allowed from Dojo.

In my classroom, students redeem 15 points to choose their own iPad game. Since Dojo allows a -5 at a time, I have to deduct 5, then deduct 5, and then deduct 5 again to show this value of -15. This is slightly a pain for the teacher, but that is the best way I found to make it work. I do reset points so students can save up for something bigger or cash out points often for something smaller. You can see the image above for working in the loft costs 25 Dojos. How to Use Class Dojo

ClassDojo is displayed during class on an interactive white board or screen in a classroom, so students can track their progress and gain a better understanding of their behavior throughout the day. Teachers have the option of both giving and taking away points for the specific behaviors they set, with just one click of a computer, smartphone, or tablet. ClassDojo also launched student logins near the end of the year so students can login at home to check their progress, set goals, and much more. Best of all, ClassDojo never requires teachers to sit down after school and enter data: all the data is logged and collated automatically in behavior reports as teachers are using ClassDojo in their classrooms. New features launched last year based on teacher feedback have made sharing with parents is just as easy. This means that not only does ClassDojo actually build better behavior in realtime, it also actually reduces the amount of work teachers need to do both in class and beyond.

Kalen Gallagher, a former middle school teacher who left the classroom last fall to join ClassDojo, explains that the broader purpose of the product is to go beyond just building good test scores, to actually building strong lifelong learners.

Avatar competition tables

Finally, let’s look at the fun avatar competition tables that I set up for my students based on their interests.

I based my first option on the FIFA game that’s so popular with my students – the objective here is can you get Ronaldo or Messi. There are various levels and points totals that students have to reach to move up a level. Once they reach each level, I change the avatar to another FIFA card and the top tiers are the most sought-after options.

Alternatively, a lot of teachers use karate belts, so each student moves forward to an avatar that holds a higher level belt. Feel free to adopt any of these ideas for what you feel will best suit your class. The underlying dynamic is that the students start with a low number and progress to a higher number to compete for the top spot.

How it Works

If you look closely at the Dojo Meter, you will notice that each color-coded monster has a specific amount of points that your students may earn in your absence. Each level also has a descriptor for their day. Depending on their behavior, each child may earn Dojo points even if you are out!

When you return to school the next day, meet with the students and praise good behaviors. Award the Dojo points earned based on the clip chart.  Speak privately with those who lost Dojo points and help them reflect on how to make better choices next time.

Using The Dojo Meter will allow your substitute teacher to utilize your existing behavior plan in your absence. Your sub will thank you for this classroom behavior management system as they navigate through the school day.

Please get there now by clicking «back to classes» in the upper left hand of your screen.

• Once there click add a new class.
• On the new screen you should be able to select your grade level and subject then name your class. For example I selected grade 6 Math and named my class Mathematicians. Here you may switch your class icon as well by clicking on the image at the top.
• When you have settled on your picture click next (bottom right) to create your class
• The following screen will allow you to add students one by one or to copy and paste a list of students. You may chose which you use.

       *If you chose to add each name:
          Enter the student's name then click enter to add the student to your list.
       * If you chose to add a whole list:
          Click the "Copy/Paste list" button then follow the directions there.

• Once you are finished adding students’ names to this class and they appear with Avatars, you may chose to change the student avatars. Do not spend time changing the avatars. This is one of the great motivational pieces of Class Dojo, once students get their logins they are able to customize their own avatars.
• When you are finished click save and close.
• If you are using this site for more than one class, then take this time to set up the rest of your class lists. However, if you are not using more than one class please move on to Phase 4.

How to use ClassDojo

Now let’s take a look at how we set up a ClassDojo class and get started with the avatars.

1. Once you’ve got yourself set up with a ClassDojo account, we click on New class and choose a Class name to insert in the text box.
2. Select a Grade and your Sharing points. I recommend selecting Share all points with parents – so that’s both positive and negative – because you want to give parents the whole picture.
3. Select Create class.
4. To Add students – you need to insert full names to ensure that the students connect to their parents.
5. Once the student has been added they appear with their avatar.

For me, it’s really important that we allow the students to choose their own avatars at the beginning of the class. This way they will identify more with their characters and this will encourage them to engage more.

To change your student’s avatar, we go to Options, then Edit class and select the student whose avatar we’d like to change. Underneath the original egg-shaped avatar, we select Hatch Egg.

Finally, we can now click on the original avatar and we are presented with a series of monsters that we can let the student select from. There are also Critters, Valentines, Reading, Birthday Avatars and many more. Once your student has made their choice, you can select Save and the student’s avatar has now changed.

Creating Dojo Subclasses

The typical method by which you can create a Dojo class (or subclass) is by using the method. The method registers your given class within its designated namespace, while also subclassing any number of classes passed in the method’s second argument.

The following code shows the basic method by which one can create a subclass:

The new class above, , is a shiny new custom Dojo class that inherits all methods and properties of the class. My new class also features a new custom property and a new custom method which can do anything I want. Now that we know how to create a subclass, let’s create a realistic example of a useful subclass: .

is an enhancement of the original class; it features two new options and overrides a method with an end goal of providing a Menu whose PopupMenuItem opens when hovered over instead of clicked.

You may be wondering how to call methods of a superclass from your new subclass. That’s simple too:

As you can see, creating subclasses is a breeze! But what can you do if you simply want to modify an existing Dojo class? Monkey patch it!

О языках. Концепции

Каждый язык реализует определённый набор концепций. Я приведу пример самых популярных языков. А популярными они стали только потому, что использовали правильные концепции. Я сознательно опустил Basic, Fortran, SmallTalk, Lisp, PROLOG. Давайте начнем с самого начала.

А сначала был Assembler. Тут концепция предельно проста — уйти от байт-кода понятного машине и перейти на более понятный человеку набор команд. Что вам нужно знать чтобы писать код на ассемблере? Вам нужно полностью знать архитектуру железки под которую пишете, какой бит какого регистра установить чтоб ваш динамик за-би-би-кал. Не поверите, на ассемблере тоже можно писать “говнокод”. Оказывается недостаточно знать набор команд и архитектуру вашей каменюки, нужно организовывать код в виде процедур, иначе вы неизбежно наговнякаете код в котором через день сами ничего не поймете, не говоря уже о расширяемости (будь ты проклята, команда goto). Какая концепция возникла в результате? – Структурное и функциональное программирование, типизация данных.

Язык С. О Си! Ты принёс свет в этот мир!=) В языке Си удачно воплотились концепции структурного программирования, четкой типизации данных, абстрагирования от аппаратной части, механизм указателей. Как и на любом другом языке, писать “говнокод” — это просто. Просто продолжайте игнорировать структуры данных, указатели и ваш код съест всю память машины, и попутно, мозг другого разработчика. По мере развития, оказалось что структурного программирования тоже не достаточно. Проекты растут, код усложняется, управлять кодом всё труднее. Так появилась концепция ООП.

С++. Прямой наследник СИ. Всё так же поддерживает структурное и функциональное программирование, но появилась поддержка ООП. Также возникло понятие неймспейсов. Писать говнокод стало еще легче! По ООП проектированию и программированию написано немало книг. И все они рассказывают нам как не писать говнокод при использовании концепции ООП. Иногда код написанный на С++ с использованием процедурного и структурного подхода выглядит намного лучше чем “ООП” код (читай — “говнокод”). Не спорю, путь к пониманию ООП может быть долгим, и на этом пути мало кому удается избежать говнокода. Разве что бородатым дядькам, помнящим суровые времена господства Фортрана и перфо-карт. ООП -это скорее образ мышления, который надо выработать. Но пока нет понимания концепции, “правильных” привычек — мы обречены писать говнокод.

Очевидные проблемы с утечками памяти и битыми указателями в Си и С++ повлияли на дальнейшее развитие языков.

Python, Ruby. Эти языки являются “динамическими”. Эти языки объединяют такие концепции как: автоматическое управление памятью, “всё есть объект”, отсутствие четкой типизации данных, кроссплатформенность. Все эти концепции относятся к более высокоуровневой концепции – “быстрое прототипирование приложения”. Я сознательно опустил Java и PHP. Java имеет четкую типизацию данных и не имеет ничего общего с быстрым прототипированием приложения. PHP не является языком общего назначения и насколько мне известно, является единственным в своем роде “языком для Web”.

Из этого краткого экскурса в историю развития языков, можно понять, что программирование и языки программирования в своем развитии руководствуются девизом “Хотим педалить больше, быстрее, понятней!”. И для достижения цели такой мотивации придумываются новые концепции. Если Вы не знаете, не умеете применять, не можете придумать эти концепции или хуже того, не хотите их применять, то вы будете писать говнокод. В первом случае — пока не узнаете/не научитесь. Во втором — Вы обречены писать говнокод.

Если Вы хотите педалить больше, быстрее, понятней, то Вы должны находиться в поиске новых концепций, которые Вам в этом помогут. Естественно, неудачная концепция неизбежно приведет говнокоду, но без этого никуда =)

ClassDojo позволяет вам давать вашему ребенку баллы как за хорошую успеваемость в школе, так и дома.

Why Can’t Your Substitute Use Class Dojo?

Personally, you may not want to provide your substitute teacher with your username and password for Class Dojo since you use the messaging feature to communicate with parents.

Also, a substitute teacher may not utilize the point system you have in place for rewards and consequences. This may lead to many messages from parents questioning how their child’s day went. They will want to know why so many points were taken, etc. Since you are out of the classroom, you may not be able to answer immediately or you don’t know why points were taken if the substitute teacher did not leave you detailed notes!

Benefits of ClassDojo

Teachers can use the website to mark the daily attendance, pick pupils for assignments, motivate them, time each task, and easily communicate with parents.

I feel that the website’s biggest benefit is that it fosters a positive learning culture where students can receive positive feedback and can be rewarded for skills like “Being Respectful” or “Working Hard”.
