Acronis True Image 2017 review: Backup gets easier and faster

Backups made easy

These days, it almost seems as if entire portions of our work and personal lives reside on our smartphones, laptops and social media accounts in the form of documents, pictures, videos, and other data. The defining feature of our era is probably how remarkably convenient, and easy to access, everything is. But that also means that we’re more susceptible to having our lives disrupted when our devices fail, or simply when accidents happen.

That’s where Acronis True Image 2017 comes in. The latest version of this consumer backup and recovery software comes equipped with a handful of new features expressly focused on the needs of the modern user. This means things like Facebook account backups and the ability to backup contacts, photos, and other data on your phone directly to your PC. Previously, True Image 2016 only lets you back up your phone to the cloud.

The new social media account backup feature is a nice touch, allowing you to back up things like posts on your timeline, liked pages, and most importantly, photos and videos. If you don’t want to back up your profile data, you can keep things leaner by just opting to back up your media library. More business-focused users may find the feature slightly superfluous, but given the number of people that use Facebook as their primary photo library, it’s probably quite a welcome feature.

That said, only Facebook is supported now, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Acronis eventually adds support for other popular platforms.

However, one thing to note is that the Facebook back up, and the option to back up to the cloud, is only available if you have a cloud subscription.

Fortunately, all these new features don’t mean additional clutter. Quite the reverse in fact, and True Image 2017 boasts a streamlined interface that requires almost no time to learn your way around. It retains the tabbed sidebar – including Dashboard, Tools, and Archive – from the previous version, but the individual menus have been tweaked to be more visual and intuitive.

For instance, clicking the dashboard icon displays just three simple icons for online dashboard, social network, and mobile device backup. The online dashboard lets you manage backups of all your devices and accounts, and you can even select individual files to recover. We particularly like the search feature that lets you locate the file you need quickly. There’s just one drawback – your search term will have to match a portion of the file name exactly, so things like underscores and dashes could get in the way of locating the right file.

There’s also a Tools tab, which offers options like disk cloning, rescue media builder, and various other tools to help you recover from hardware failures or data loss. Just as with the dashboard tab, hovering over each icon will load a helpful description of what it does, in case you’re unsure.

Acronis has made it easy to get started in True Image 2017. After installing and firing up the software, you’re immediately greeted by a screen that prompts you to back up your local PC. You can choose to back up the entire PC, or just certain folders and partitions. Similarly, you can back up your data to the Acronis Cloud, an external drive, or some other network location.

Furthermore, anyone who has lost a hard drive full of important data will be happy to know that the same options are available to external drives as well.

But all these features would be of little use if the software was bogged down by slow speeds. Thankfully, that’s not the case here, and Acronis has actually placed a strong emphasis on providing a speedy experience with this release. While last year’s version boosted backup speeds with support for parallel data streams, Acronis says 2017’s version ups the ante with a further 25 per cent performance increase.

We didn’t exactly parse the numbers, but it took about two hours to back up 65GB of data to Acronis Cloud. At default settings – that is, with the operation priority set to low to minimize the network impact on other applications – we averaged speeds of around 90Mbps. And because you can close the program and let it run in the background while you work, you won’t even notice the time go by.

Скажу сразу, ранее я не пользовался Acronis True Image и отдавал предпочтение резервному копированию стандартными средствами для портативных носителей Western Digital. Почувствовал ли я разницу? Да, несомненно. По части резервного копирования Acronis True Image 2017 просто нет равных: удобный интерфейс, тонкая настройка резервного копирования, шифрование и бэкап в облако Acronis Cloud  делают этот инструмент безупречным. В свою очередь, электронная подпись — дело, конечно, хорошее, но оставим его корпоративному сегменту. Ну и, помимо резервного копирования, программа умеет много возможностей для управления носителями и даже служит маленьким антивирусом благодаря Acronis Active Protection.

Конечно, это платное программное обеспечение, но уверенность в сохранности файлов того стоит!

Резервное копирование

Резервное копирование — простой и надежный способ защиты данных, особенно если оно выполняется в автоматическом режиме и за короткий промежуток времени, да еще и на несколько носителей. И тут Acronis True Image 2017 может многое, помимо бэкапа на локальные носители можно настроить бэкап на облачное хранилище Acronis Cloud, выбрать полный бэкап системы или отдельных папок/файлов, детально настроить расписание синхронизации, можно даже выбрать непрерывное создание бэкапа, настроить исключения файлов, задать шифрование и т.д.Помимо стандартных для бэкапа настроек, появилась возможность поставить электронную подпись резервной копии или отдельных файлов c последующей проверкой подлинности и неизменности файла. Важен подобный функционал будет скорее в корпоративном сегменте, а простым пользователям вряд ли понадобиться эта возможность.

 Резервное копирование Facebook

Зарезервировать фото, видео и т.д. в Facebook теперь стало возможно благодаря Acronis True Image 2017, нужно только пройти авторизацию и  разрешить доступ на выполнение резервных копий. После можно просматривать зарезервированные данные.

Архивация файлов и папок

Наверное каждый сталкивался с проблемой, когда память на системном носителе почти закончилась и операционная система бьет тревогу в попытках убедить вас, что надо освободить диск от лишнего мусора. Acronis True Image 2017 в этом случае будет отличным помощником — он сам проанализирует большие и давно не используемые файлы и после вашего подтверждения перенесет эти данные в облако Acronis Cloud или другой носитель в свободном или зашифрованном виде

Синхронизация данных между устройствами

Перенести данные с одного устройства на другое — проще простого с использованием Acronis True Image 2017. Возможен перенос как внутри одной сети между компьютерами, так и перенос данных через облако Acronis Cloud, например, на смартфон.

Режим Try&Decide

Я бы назвал этот режим — режим неуверенного пользователя. Смысл функции в том, что во время ее включения полностью сохраняется текущее состояние системы, а все изменения фиксируются и если что-то пошло не так, то можно мгновенно отменить все изменения.

Функция Acronis Active Protection

Многие наверное сталкивались с программами и сайтами-вымогателями, типа: «оплати 200 рублей на счет ХХХХХ и мы разблокируем твой комппьютер», в новой версии Acronis True Image научился защищать компьютер и ваши резервные копии от подобных программ. Получается, Acronis служит еще и маленьким антивирусом.

Зона безопасности Acronis

Эта функция позволит создать зашифрованный раздел диска, доступ к которому можно будет получить только после ввода ключа шифрования.

Дополнительные возможности

Помимо всего нового и улучшенного старого, Acronis True Image 2017 сохранил стандартные возможности: клонирование диска, осистка диска, создание загрузочных носителей и т.д.

Acronis True Image 2017 is a backup software for your PC or Mac that installs in just two clicks.

You can use it to back up your photos, documents, files, Facebook account and everything else on your computer as well as your phones and tablets (iPhone, iPad and Android devices). You can even use Acronis True Image 2017 to back up your operating system, settings, NAS devices and more.

To make it easy, you can schedule backups, and even remotely run a backup for someone else.

What I like

I found this software to be very easy to use. The dashboard is simple, organized and logical. If you’ve used powerful backup tools before, you know that sometimes their dashboards feel like an intimidating NASA-level programming interface. Not so with Acronis True Image 2017, which has a lot of powerful features, but also manages to be user friendly.

The cloud backup! We travel constantly, meaning we don’t always have access to our home computer. Having a cloud-based backup of our files has been an absolute lifesaver more than once!

What I love

I like to have a backup of my phone photos and videos on both the cloud and on my computer. Honestly, it’s always a pain to get a PC backup from my phone. I’m on an Android phone, so I usually manually plug in a USB cable, and drag files over to my PC to back them up. It’s not especially fast, and I usually only back up my videos and pictures, leaving my contacts, calendar, and messages on the phone, with no backup. I do have my photos and videos set to automatically backup to the cloud, but have no idea how to set it to backup my contacts, calendar and messages.

I have to say using Acronis to back up by WiFi is a world easier. It’s so easy to use that I had my mobile phone’s backup started in less than five minutes.

Make sure your mobile phone and computer, which is running Acronis, are on the same WiFi network.

Install the Acronis True Image 2017 mobile app. Start the app and pair your phone and computer by using the QR code in Acronis on your computer. This sounds technical, but it honestly only took about two minutes, and the Acronis app guided me through the whole process.

Next, set up what you want to back up, and if you want it backed up to the Acronis cloud, or to your PC. Then click Backup, and it goes to work for you.

What I don’t like

Honestly, there’s really nothing that I truly dislike about this software.

I’ve read other reviews that complain that the Acronis Facebook backup doesn’t restore directly to Facebook, but that’s not really Acronis’ fault. As far as I can tell, no backup software can restore everything to Facebook in one click, simply because Facebook’s back end API doesn’t allow it. Facebook doesn’t even let you manually restore an entire Facebook backup in one swoop.

Instead, you need to manually re-upload your photos, manually add friends, and so on. That said, it should be a lot easier to restore a hacked Facebook account from an Acronis backup that lets you see your old friend list and grab photos from the backup.

When you use Acronis, you backup to either your PC, an external drive, or the Acronis cloud. There’s no option to backup to other services like Amazon Cloud, Dropbox or Google Drive. The advantage of this is that your data’s kept on the secure Acronis cloud.

Cool features

You can even use it to back up your Facebook.

You can also use the remote feature to run a backup for someone else. I’m going to love this feature for backing up my Mom’s computer remotely!

The bottom line

I’d rate Acronis True Image 2017 a solid A. It’s jam-packed full of features, easy to use, I love the mobile backup, and it offers a cloud storage option, which is an absolute essential!
