Editing with Clipchamp – Cinematic Trip Through the Badlands
This was the first time I tried to edit a video using a browser-based video editor. Overall, I found it surprisingly easy to edit with Clipchamp but also learned about the limitations of using a browser-based editor.
To get a good idea of how Clipchamp might fit into my workflow, I decided to create a cinematic video inspired by the movie Nomadland during my road trip through Badlands National Park and Custer State Park.
All the footage in this video was shot with the DJI Pocket 2 in 4k 24FPS. Even though the maximum export resolution in Clipchamp is 1080p, I decided to shoot in 4k, to try to get the best video quality possible.
Camera Settings Used:
● Video Format: 4k 23.98 FPS
● Shutter Speed: 1/50
● ISO: As low as possible, but tried not to go over ISO 800
● White Balance: Auto
● Picture Profile: D-Cinelike

On March 9, 2022, Microsoft released a new build – Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22572 for the Dev Channel. Some new features and improvements are included in this new update, for example, Microsoft Defender Preview, Clipchamp, etc.

As for Windows 11 Clipchamp, we will introduce it to you today. In Sep 2021, Microsoft acquired Clipchamp for the upcoming Windows 11 operating system. It is a free web-based app to edit videos. And now Clipchamp is an inbox app that will come pre-installed on all the Windows 11 devices. It is a replacement for Windows Movie Maker.
What Is Clipchamp Essentials?
Though Clipchamp is free and free from any watermarked download, it’s only for content that doesn’t include any premium features. If your created video includes any billable content, you’ll need to download the video with a watermark from Clipchamp.
Not to mention, you can’t access the following premium features either:

How to use Clipchamp in Windows 11 22H2
After the installation of Windows 11 22H2 onto your PC, you will see Clipchamp in the list of applications found on the Start Menu (Figure A), where you can treat it just like any other application in the list. If you plan to use Clipchamp often, it would be a good idea to pin it to the Start Menu or the Taskbar.

When you start Clipchamp for the first time (Figure B), you will see a familiar Windows 11-style application screen, highlighted by a significant list of popular video templates.

The easiest way to start a video project is to choose one of the templates, which will provide you with various templated parts you can use to create your own video. As you can see in Figure C, the YouTube Clipchamp template offers intro and outro ideas, effect samples and other presentation ideas that you can use to build your own video.

Whether you choose a template, or choose to start with a blank slate, the next screen (Figure D) will present you with a relatively standard storyboard interface common for video editing applications. For our example template, we have chosen the Top 5 Countdown list.

The interface is similar to other video editing applications.
As you can see, the template shows you all the various parts associated with the production of a simple countdown list video. Users can just follow along and replace the template examples with their own video footage.
Clipchamp also offers access to free stock videos that you can use to enhance and add to your video productions. This free stock includes footage for special events like birthdays and the change of seasons, as well as background imagery like landscapes and colorful geometric patterns.
The free version of Clipchamp includes an example brand kit that users can modify and use in their videos. With the brand kit, you can ensure that your name, logo, address and other brand information is included in all your videos.
Separate Audio from Video Track
You have separate audio from video track function available in Clipchamp video editor. I have used this option during the video editing to make additional adjustments.
You can select the video track and click on the Audio button, as shown below. You have an option to increase or decrease the audio of the clip. Another button is called separate audio; you can click on that button to separate the audio from the video clip.

The separated audio files will be downloaded automatically to your computer’s local drive. Normally this will get downloaded to the Downloads folder.

Zoom Delete Split Duplicate – Timeline options with Windows 11 Free Video Editor app Clipchamp
Let’s check Zoom, Delete, Split, Duplicate, etc., options in this section. Windows 11 Free Video Editor app Clipchamp is included in the Windows insider builds as an Inbox application. Let’s look at timeline options with Clipchamp.
As I mentioned above, the timeline is where most video editors spend most of their time editing the video clips. Zoom In, Zoom Out, and Zoom Fit are the options I always use to make video editing easier.
Zoom options in Clipchamp helps to zoom a particular part of the video and add/remove additional elements from that part of the video.
Split option on the timeline editor to split the videos into two parts or insert additional elements between two video clips.
Duplicate option in Clipchamp helps to make a copy the one portal of the video element. The duplicate option normally helps to repeat the video clips many time in between the same video.
The delete option in the Clipchamp editor helps remove some of the unwanted parts of the video clip and fine-tune. The Undo option is very useful to recover from some errors in the previous edit.

How to Add a Transition in a Video
When you are using two or more clips in a video, the point where the clips change might seem jarring. To fix this, you can add a transition to smooth out the change.
Select Filters & transition from the main menu. Then drag a drop a suitable transition in between two video clips. Preview the transition in the preview window. If you don’t like it, try other transitions until you find the one you like most.
Once you’re done, you can click on Export on the top right, and the video will begin exporting in the browser. You’ll see the options to save and share your video like Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive. You can even upload your video straight to YouTube, Tik Tok, or Pinterest.
Once it’s done, you can grab the video’s link to share with anyone you like. And, finally, Clipchamp will save a copy of your video to your PC, allowing you to post it anywhere or back it up on the storage of your choice.
How to Record Screen and Camera Using Clipchamp
In addition to using Clipchamp as a video editor, you can use it to record your desktop screen and webcam on Windows 11. Here’s how to record the screen and camera using Clipchamp:
1. Open Clipchamp on your system.
2. Then click on the Create a New Video option.
3. Here, you will get the Clipchamp video editor interface. Click on the Record & Create option.
4. Clipchamp provides you with three recording options: Screen and camera, Camera, and Screen. Since I only want to capture the computer screen, I will choose the screen option.
5. Then click on the Record button.
Note: In the free version of Clipchamp, you can only record for 30 minutes. If you wish to record for more than 30 minutes, you will need to upgrade your plan.
6. After that, you will find an option to select the screen and an option to record system audio. Once you’re done, click on the Share button. Now, whatever you do on the screen will be captured by Clipchamp.
7. Once the recording is done, click on the Stop Sharing button and launch the Clipchamp app.
8. Now, review the recorded video. If you are satisfied with the video, click on the Save and Edit button. Otherwise, click on the retake recording button.
9. After that, you will get the editing window. From here, you can easily edit your video.
Note: There’s another option under the Record & Create option, which is Text-to-Speech. Using this you can convert your written text into audio format. All you need to do is select the language, pitch, and voice tone after which you can enter the text that you want to convert in a speech or audio file.

How to Add and Change Text in the Video Templates
To add text, click on the purple text box above the video section in the timeline (each text appearing in the video will have a separate text box). The editing options will appear above the preview window, namely, Text, Transform, Colors, Filters, Adjust Colors, and Fade.
Click on the Text option to change the text and also the font. See the screenshot below, which shows I changed the text to Get Set For a Yummy Launch.
Further in the video, the text Website.com appears. To change that click on its purple text box, select the Text option to add your website name. I changed the text to my website name, which is SliceYum.com.
You can preview the video to see how it looks. If you want to change the text style, select Text in the main vertical menu on the left to browse the options. I chose a Two Line style for my website name, SliceYum.com, and below it is the launch date: 1.1.2022.

Clipchamp Editor is the place where all content creation magic happens. It’s accessible via the cloud app and Windows app. However, all the UI elements are the same on both platforms.

The Brand kit is the must-have tool for you if you’re a professional video content creator. You must follow a brand content creation guideline, like a set menu for color palettes, fonts, stock images, company logos, infographic templates, etc.
You can upload those in the Brand kit section. Now, brand assets are at your fingertips whenever you use the app. With a few mouse buttons, you can create consistent video content that speaks for your brand.
Once you get a paid plan for Clipchamp, head to the Brand kit section. Then, upload these assets: logos, color palettes, and fonts.
When editing or creating a video on the Clipchamp Editor, click the Brand kit option on the left-side navigational pane. The Brand kit menu will now open with three folders for Fonts, Colors, and Logos.
Pick the brand assets you need from this folder and insert them into the video via the timeline.
3. Templates
What Is Clipchamp the Templates
Clipchamp templates help you to create creative content without starting from scratch. You can choose a template that matches your content intention.
Open the template in the Clipchamp video editor. Now, simply customize its elements like font, color, stock images, transitions, etc., to create attractive social media or business videos.
You can add your audio or images to the template for advanced personalization. The Clipchamp development team at Microsoft constantly adds new templates to the library. Currently, the template section contains the following video themes:

4. Add Folder

- Below the preview screen, you see the content timeline. You can drag and drop content on the timeline to increase the length of the video, add special effects, add text overlays, and more.
- The left-side navigation menu is the source of all content you can add to your video. From the top, you get the options like Your media, Record & create, Templates, Music & SFX, Stock video, Stock images, Text, Graphics (vector arts), Transitions, and Brand kit.
- On the right side, you get the video control menu. It lets you customize various features of your video like Captions, Audio, Fade, Filters, Adjust colors, Speed, Transition, and Color.
Once you’ve successfully created a video and are ready to export it as a file, click the Export button in the top corner of the app. It’ll offer you three options for video export. These are 480p, 720p, and 1080p (HD).
If the video you’re about to export is 15 seconds or less in runtime, you can download a GIF of the content.
How to Create a TikTok Video on Clipchamp
Creating a TikTok video on Clipchamp is super easy. Here are the steps:
- Click Create a new video on the Home screen.
- Select Templates from the sidebar.
- Scroll down to TikTok. Click on it.
- Scroll the library and choose a video theme you like.
- Click Add to timeline on the template preview screen.
- Allow the app to prepare the timeline for you.
- You can edit the text overlays from the timeline. They show up as violet color bars.
- If you want to change the audio, delete the blue timeline content and replace it with stock audio from Music & SFX section.
- You can drag and drop more transitions if you like.
- When ready, click Export to download an MP4 file.
- You can also create an online link to directly share the content via YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc.
Clipchamp: What you’ll like
Clipchamp has a small learning curve, so people should be able to jump right into editing. While it can be used for more advanced multi-layer video projects, you could also just clip together a few gaming highlights and call it a day. Clipchamp has a simple drag-and-drop interface that extends throughout the entire app.
The free version of Clipchamp is a bit limited, but I found the full library of features to be impressive. It’s not going to replace Adobe Premiere Pro, but I don’t think it’s meant to. Clipchamp is complex enough to make a professional business video, which I think is more of its aim. It supports screen recordings, green screens, and video capture, all of which fit right at home in a corporate space. Two of the paid plans have business in their name, and it’s easy to see why.
You can add video and audio to Clipchamp from your PC or add footage from cloud storage providers like OneDrive or Dropbox. The video editor also integrates with stock audio, stock images, and even Giphy. I had some fun playing around with GIFs, including a dancing banana that appears briefly in my team’s highlight reel. Clipchamp makes it easy to add content from all over the web and your PC.
The stock libraries in the Business and Business Platinum plans are great additions for creators in the workplace. I found it easy to find graphics, sounds, and videos to enhance my video. My example above is light-hearted, but there’s no shortage of content for more professional presentations and videos.
Clipchamp’s highest plan includes support for a brand kit. This lets you add a color palette to make sure your content looks consistent from video to video.
A new feature called Clipchamp Teams is available in beta. It allows you to collaborate on videos. This will fit right in with Microsoft’s other services, and I wouldn’t be shocked if it was a big reason Microsoft looked into Clipchamp.
