Where Can I Use Windows 10 LTSC?

In Microsoft conception, the LTSC version is not intended to be installed on general-purpose computers or on all corporate computers. It means that this edition is not for widespread use on common office workstations. LTSB is supposed to be used on business-critical computers, where security and stability are more important for the users than the changes of interface or system features. For example, self-service terminals, kiosks, medical systems, industrial systems with controllers, ATMs, air traffic control computers, etc., are the most suitable candidates for installing Windows 10 LTSC. I. e. LTSC niche is close to the class of embedded devices.

According to Microsoft statistics, Windows 10 LTSC/LTSB edition is used by about 3% of devices running Win 10.

What’s one of the least-understood aspects of LTSB?

We couldn’t stop at just one, so we highlighted a pair of points about LTSB.

First, although IT admins can switch PCs from LTSB to plain Windows 10 Enterprise – so those machines can receive feature upgrades, for instance – such a change is only supported when moving to the same or later SAC. If an enterprise has been running Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB, for example, it can shift only to Windows 10 Enterprise 1607 or later (meaning 1703, 1709 or 1803).

(And you’d better hurry if you plan to switch from 2016 LTSB to SAC 1607, since that version’s support expires in April 2019.)

Second, starting Jan. 14, 2020, the locally-installed applications included with an Office 365 subscription – they’re called «Office 365 ProPlus» – will not be supported on any version of Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB. Instead, LTSB systems must run Office 2016 or 2019, the perpetual license counterparts to ProPlus. (Office 2019 is supported on Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 only, not earlier versions.)

Записываем ISO-образ на флешку

В момент записи все данные с флешки будут стёрты. Для записи загрузочной флешки, нам нужен rufus. Качаем здесь или на официальном сайте.

Запускаем rufus и подключаем USB флешку(она появится в строке — «Устройство»). Выбираем ранее загруженный образ Windows кнопкой «ВЫБРАТЬ»(образ должен находиться в папке «Загрузки»).

are designed to provide longer update support (10 years) and it lacks
most of the Store (UWP) apps.
Windows 10 GAC (General Availability Channel) (i.e. Home, Pro)
will reach end of support on October
14, 2025. So, if your hardware doesn’t support Windows 11 then you
might wanna use Windows 10 Iot Enterprise LTSC 2021 since its supported
until Jan
13, 2032.
Microsoft provides Evaluation ISO public links for Windows
LTSC releases, but as the name states, those ISO’s are for evaluation
purposes and can not be activated.
Microsoft provides full version of Windows LTSC on MVS and VLSC
but for them, you need to pay a high subscription fee.

Iot Enterprise LTSC 2021 ISO is available in English language
only. However you can install Non-Iot version in your language and
install Iot key to switch the
edition or just use HWID activation in MAS which will do that for
you.
Difference between Iot and Non-Iot Windows Enterprise LTSC
2021:
- Licensing — Non-Iot version supports the KMS license but not the
  Digital license. Iot version supports the Digital license and after the
  update 19044.2788, it supports the KMS license as well.
- Sandbox — Initial release (19044.1288) of Iot LTSC didn’t have
  sandbox but non-Iot version had. Later updates enabled it in Iot as
  well, so there is no difference anymore.
- Reserved storage feature — Iot doesn’t have reserved storage feature
  and it’s install takes less space in installation. (Feature is not much
  important for LTSC release)
- Windows Update — Iot is supported till 2032 and Non-Iot is supported
  till 2027.
  Conclusion, Iot LTSC is better.
You can change the editions to each other (Iot and Non-Iot
Windows Enterprise LTSC) only by inserting corresponding edition
key.

Чтобы получить доступ к загрузке этого оценочного ПО, необходимо на сайте залогиниться с использованием учётной записи Майкрософт. Логинимся, выбираем раздел «Оценить сейчас» и – «Windows 10 Enterprise».

Далее указываем пункт «ISO — LTSC».

Заполняем вопросник Microsoft, указываем нужную разрядность, язык (русского дистрибутива, кстати, нет) и скачиваем.

3.2. Сайт by adguard

Альтернативный источник загрузки дистрибутива LTSC – сайт by adguard, проект энтузиастов, содержащий дистрибутивы многих продуктов Microsoft, в частности, Windows. Здесь не нужно никакой авторизации, да и отдача серверов чуть щедрее, чем на сайте компании.

Идём по адресу:

Указываем тип дистрибутива, как показано на скриншоте ниже, и скачиваем ISO нужной разрядности.

Русификация

Отсутствие русскоязычного дистрибутива LTSC не является проблемой. В Windows 10 перевод системы на любой другой язык упрощён. В ней все необходимые настройки собраны в одном месте. Идём в раздел параметров «Time & language» (если дистрибутив выбирался на английском).

В подразделе «Language» жмём «Add language».

Прописываем в поиске «russian», жмём «Next».

Далее – «Install».

После этого кликаем «Administrative language settings».

Жмём «Copy settings», выставляем внизу две галочки, кликаем «Ок».

Отказываемся от перезагрузки.

Жмём «Change system locale», выставляем «Russian», ставим галочку использования UTF-8. Кликаем «Ок».

А вот теперь уже можем перезагружаться.

Сброс активации

Win10 LTSC – это, как упоминалось, система, поставляемая бесплатно в рамках проекта оценки ПО Microsoft с легальной активацией на 90 дней. Но этот срок можно увеличить до 360 дней, если по истечении каждый 90 дней трижды сбросить активацию.

Как сбросить?

Нам нужна командная строка.

Вводим:

slmgr -rearm

И перезагружаемся.

What Is Windows 10 LTSC Edition?

Windows 10 LTSC Edition is a long-term servicing channel operating system produced by Microsoft. It’s a release that Microsoft creates about every three years. Each release contains all the new capabilities and support that is included in Windows 10 feature updates. In addition, LTSC OS receives updates every 10 years, taking into account the release period.

Microsoft does not officially encourage the use of LTSC outside the “special purpose devices” that perform a static function and therefore do not require new features for the user experience.

According to the Microsoft announcement, this service option has been renamed from the Long-term Servicing Branch (LTSB) in 2016 to the Long Term Service Channel (LTSC) in 2018. To certify, Windows 10 LTSB replaced with Windows 10 LTSB.

How to Get Windows 10 LTSB

Windows 10 LTSB is only available as part of Windows 10 Enterprise. Windows 10 Enterprise is only available to organizations with volume licensing agreements or through a new $7 per-month subscription plan.

Officially, if you are part of an organization with a volume licensing program, you are free to install Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB on your PC, not Windows 10 Enterprise.

Unofficially, any Windows user can get Windows 10 LTSB on demand. Microsoft offers ISO images with Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB as part of its 90-day Enterprise Evaluation Program. You can download the ISO file (be sure to select “Windows 10 LTSB” instead of “Windows 10” when downloading) and install it on your PC.

According to Microsoft, it will work fine for 90 days, after which it will start urging you to activate Windows and your PC will shut down every hour. However, you can use Slmgr to “re-arm” the trial version for 90 days, which according to some users will work up to 3 times for a total of 9 months.

Полученный образ можно записать на любой внешний диск с помощью штатных средств Windows или сторонних приложений, например, UltraISO. Для этого:

Откроем приложение и перетащим загруженный образ в окно программы, либо вручную укажем путь к файлу через меню «Файл», выбрав кнопку «Открыть».
После появления образа в окне программы обратимся к верхней панели, активировав следующие ссылки: «Самозагрузка» – «Записать образ жёсткого диска…».
В новом меню укажем диск, используемый для записи, и снимем галочку у пункта «Create Boot Partition».
Нажмём на кнопку «Записать» и дождёмся окончания процесса.

После завершения записи перезагрузим компьютер и укажем наш диск в качестве загрузочного устройства. Дальше следуем инструкциям стандартного установщика Windows 10 Enterprise.

Нам не потребуется использование ключей или активаторов – система доступна без каких-либо ограничений в течение 90 дней, затем она требует оформления лицензии, блокируя настройки «Персонализации» и перезагружая компьютер каждый час.

Тем не менее, есть вполне легальный способ продлить использование лицензии до года – не корректный с юридической точки зрения, но оправданный технически. Для этого потребуется следующее:

Запустим «Командную строку» или «Windows PowerShell» от имени администратора.
Введём и активируем команду «slmgr.vbs /rearm – это продлит срок действия лицензии на ещё 90 дней. Команду можно использовать до трёх раз – фактически продляя срок службы бесплатной версии Windows до года.

Microsoft OS LTSB To LTSC Label Changes:

As part of compatibility with Windows 10, a common term will make it as easy as possible to understand the maintenance process. From now on, these are the new items:

Semi-annual channel – we will refer to the current branch (CB) as a “semi-annual channel (target)”, while simply refer to the current branch of business (CBB) as a “semi-annual channel.”
Long-term service channel – Long-term services (LTSB) will be referred to as long-term service channels (LTSC).

Windows 10 Enterprise 2019 LTSC basically follows the same approach as Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB. Nonetheless, Windows 10 Enterprise 2019 LTSC features several changes and improvements over its predecessor. The most important new features are listed below:

How Often Does Windows 10 LTSB Update?

Windows 10 LTSB does receive the usual monthly security updates.
Twice-yearly feature upgrades offered to other channels will not be offered to the LTSB system.
Microsoft upgrades LTSB “builds” every two to three years.
Each LTSB release supports ten years of security updates, the same 10-year lifecycle that Microsoft has specified and maintained over the years. The decade is divided into two equal parts: the first five years for “mainstream” support, and the second for “extended”. For Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB, mainstream support will end in October 2021 and extended support will end in October 2026.

Advantage and Difference Between Windows 10 LTSC 2019 and Windows 10 1809

In Windows 10 LTSC 2019, unlike Windows 10 1809 from the Semi-Annual Channel (which it is based on), there are no these features in the operation system:

Edge browser;
Microsoft Store;
Preinstalled UWP apps (apps from Microsoft Store, both official and third-party ones). Even a Photo Viewer must be enabled manually;
OneDrive;
Virtual assistant Cortana;
Windows Ink Workspace, a digital pen;
There is no hardware support for VP9/HEVC ( used on YouTube, encrypted video streams – Netflix, Amazon Video, etc.).

Windows 10 LTSC Start Menu is empty – you won’t see any icons of preinstalled apps.

Due to the absence of unnecessary UWP apps, you don’t need to update them (the system downloads and installs only critical security updates), and there are less active processes number in the Task Manager. This is why Windows 10 LTSC may be installed on old models of PCs or laptops with 2 (or even 1!) GB of RAM. It also takes up less disk space.

Since Windows 10 LTSC is based on the Enterprise edition, there is a set of all necessary software and features to be used in corporate networks (Windows To Go, AppLocker, Local Group Policy Editor – gpedit.msc, you can join this Windows edition to the Active Directory domain, integrated Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) support and User Environment Virtualization (UE-V), Device Guard and Credential Guard, DirectAccess, Branch Cache, advanced telemetry management options, etc.).

How to Download Windows 10 LTSC Evaluation?

Any user can download the ISO with the trial version of Windows 10 LTSC from Microsoft Evaluation Center website for free (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-10-enterprise).

Just select the ISO – LTSC edition (Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC x86 and x64 are available), fill in the registration form and get your Windows 10 installation ISO.

To install the Evaluation edition, you don’t need to specify the Windows 10 product key. You can use the evaluation LTSC version for 90 days, and then you have to activate it using the private MAK key (or on your KMS server). Otherwise, the screen background will become black, and your computer will be restarted every hour.

You can extend Windows 10 LTSC 2019 evaluation period up to three times using command. Thus, you will be able to use the evaluation version for 4×90=360 days – it is almost a year!

Windows 10 Servicing (Release) Channel

The LTSC abbreviation in the name of this Windows 10 edition stands for Long-Term Servicing Channel. To understand what it means you have to understand the concept of Windows servicing channels. Microsoft uses them in the life-cycle of its OS in the Windows-as-a-Service model.

Windows LTSC version is a special Windows edition with the long-term support. In the Windows LTSC versions (earlier they were called LTSB – Long-Term Servicing Branch) Microsoft focuses on the system stability.

Windows 10 LTSC life-cycle is 10 years (5 years of the main lifetime and 5 years of extended support). It means that Microsoft will support Windows 10 1809 till 2028. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC gets 5 more years of extended support only if your company takes part in the Software Assurance program.

At the same time in the support period this Windows version gets only the security updates and patches to fix certain bugs. Meanwhile, Windows functionality will not get any changes. Microsoft updates Windows 10 LTSB/LTSC build every two or three years (and the user decides if they want to upgrade to the next long-term build, i. e. the OS is not upgraded automatically). Today the latest LTSC version is based on Windows 10 1809 (the previous LTSB version was based on Windows 10 1607).

Unlike the LTSC channel, SAC (Semi-Annual Channel), earlier known as CB — Current Branch, is designed for those who want to get all the latest Windows features (Feature Updates) as soon as possible.

As part of the SAC channel, Microsoft releases new Windows 10 build twice a year (in spring and in autumn – these are the builds Windows 10 1703, 1709, 1803, 1809, 1903, 1909, etc.). Each new Windows edition in SAC is supported for 18 months only. It means that if your Windows version was released more than 18 months ago, it would not get any security updates or bug fixes.

You can find out your current Windows 10 service channel using PowerShell:

In this example, the computer is running Windows 10 in the Semi-Annual Channel. The build 1903 is used.
